Gail Khan is an accomplished Education Project Management Consultant with nearly 30 years of experience driving transformational change across schools, academies, and local authorities. 

Since founding Gail Khan Associates (GKA) in 2011, she has successfully delivered hundreds of complex education projects, earning a reputation for clarity, structure, and strategic leadership.

Gail’s expertise spans project management, governance, stakeholder engagement, and communications, making her a trusted advisor to both public and private sector clients. Her hands-on approach and deep understanding of the education landscape enable her to navigate challenges with precision and deliver sustainable outcomes that improve school performance and operational efficiency.

Melanie Clarke

Project Support and Administration

Melanie is our Project Support and senior administrator with over 30 years PA and admin experience at Director and Executive level and acts as a central point of contact. Working with GKA for over 8 years with a strong background in administration, organisation and a keen eye for detail Melanie has been instrumental in streamlining processes and ensuring a smooth transition for colleagues and clients.  Throughout her career Melanie has consistently demonstrated exceptional organisational and problem-solving skills.  Melanie is adept at identifying areas for improvement and effectively communicating with stakeholders at all levels.  Melanie is committed to fostering a positive and productive work environment and takes pride in building strong relationships with colleagues and clients alike.

Michelle Phillips

Project Manager/Co-ordinator

Michelle has over 20 year’s experience across a wide range of sectors from private industry to education. Having worked in a well-established multi academy trust she brings a wealth of communications and management experience leading teams, ensuring that key deadlines are met, scoping and delivering projects with an emphasis on quality.  Michelle provides oversight and coordination of key tasks including, but not limited to, DfE applications, project planning, meeting co-ordination, procurement of contracts and procurement of FF&E for the schools she works with. 

Michelle has a wealth of experience in safer recruitment practices which she has used to support GKA projects in their recruitment of new staff to ensure that schools are ready to open on time to their pupils.

Michelle also brings significant experience providing senior-level administrative and PA support in schools, alongside more than 10 years of PA and project support experience in various sectors. She is highly organised, an excellent planner and negotiator, and is known for her cheerful and collaborative approach. With two children who have been through every level of education, Michelle is passionate about education and committed to supporting positive opportunities for all young people.  

Helen Oldroyd

Project Manager/Co-ordinator

Helen has over 24 years’ experience working with schools and academies in a finance and business support role. Specifically in the last 7 years, Helen has worked for more than 30 different academy trusts. She has experience of working with Primary, Secondary, Special and Alternative Provision settings. 

She specialises in financial and cash flow forecasting, budget scenario planning for staff restructuring processes, financial efficiency reviews to ensure sustainability, including integrated curriculum financial planning (ICFP) exercises. In recent years, Helen has worked with Head Teachers to develop numerous recovery plans for academies experiencing financial difficulties whom were at risk of receiving financial notices to improve from the DfE.

Helen has provided interim capacity and support to set up and embed procedures in newly established or growing trusts, including financial due diligence exercises and the costing of MAT shared services whilst developing their Trust’s core offer. 

Helen can undertake internal assurance reviews for Trust Boards to ensure compliance with Trust policies and the Academy Trust Handbook. 

Additional capacity and support can also be provided in areas such as:

  • ESFA statutory returns

Hardip Hayer

Project Manager

Hardip has over 20 years of project management experience in both the public and private sector. She has experience of working with clients from a wide variety of sectors including education, buildings, financial and health.   

She has substantial experience of supporting the delivery of accelerated programmes in the education sector including the delivery of a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), sponsored Academies, individual Academy Conversions, and Studio Schools.

Hardip has a highly organised and systematic approach and offers proactive, practical support to clients as well as maintaining all project documents and keeping open lines of communication with all stakeholders.  

Priding herself on achieving the required deadlines and avoiding scope-creep, Hardip ensures value for money for clients and completion of projects on time and on budget.  

Hardip has a strong research background having worked for research agencies for five years where she supported the design, implementation and execution of social and commercial research projects.   

Charlotte Handy

Marketing and Communications Consultant

Charlotte is a strategic marketing consultant and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing with over 20 years of experience in planning and delivering multi channel marketing campaigns, leading website developments, brand strategy and developing engaging internal communications strategies. Charlotte has worked in the education and higher education sectors, providing marketing and communications guidance to senior level colleagues such as Director of Service, CEO, Headteacher and Executive Leadership Teams for the last 15 years.  She is a conscientious, solutions focused, creative thinker with excellent organisational skills.  She is adept at managing multiple projects and teams to achieve results.

Charlotte has worked on the marketing communications for a number of new schools, including secondary and special schools; from the consultation process to the official opening, developing brand identities, uniforms, websites and other marketing collateral. She has commissioned new content management systems to enable Trusts to effectively manage DfE compliance and Trust content across their school websites working closely with Headteachers and website developers to create appropriate website solutions.  Charlotte has successfully developed and delivered a variety of marketing recruitment campaigns that have seen admissions rise significantly.

Charlotte has developed internal communications strategies for organisations, including developing staff SharePoint sites, content plans and campaigns to aid engagement and retention. She has also developed staff recruitment campaign plans to help Trusts to recruit staff and stand out from the crowd.  In addition, Charlotte is also a Governor at a special school academy, where she is link Governor for Stakeholder Engagement.   
Claire Helm

Marketing and Communications Specialist

Claire is a marketing professional with extensive experience in business development, marketing communications and people management.

Before establishing her own marketing and business development consultancy CHC, Claire has held a number of Sales and Marketing Director positions. Most recently at Taylor O’Brien and prior to this With (now called WRG), both creative agencies based in Manchester.

Before With, Claire was Sales and Marketing Director at CragRats, an award-winning learning organisation for education and business, for nine years. Claire developed and ran a large contract for Training and Enterprise Councils before evolving this into a £1.5 million contract for Learning and Skills Councils across the country, delivering Post 16 Options programmes into schools.

Claire has worked across the public and private sectors with clients as diverse as Connexions, the Audit Commission, Councils, LEA’s, NHS, Place Group, Mouchel Plc, ASDA, 3i, British Energy, Grohe, JOYOU, Lloyds TSB, MACE, BT, Scottish Water, Equifax, GMCA (Greater Manchester Combined Authority), AGMA (Association of Greater Manchester Authorities) and New Economy Manchester.

For the past 6 years, she has led a Multi Academy Trust’s HR and People team, creating a values-driven, fully integrated HR function.

Her expertise includes workforce planning, leadership development, employee engagement, TUPE processes, employment law, and performance management—underpinned by her legal background and a deep understanding of the complexities of multi-site, cross-LA operations. Lesley regularly advises senior leaders and Boards and chairs a local primary school governing body.

Richard Wetherall

Education Finance Consultant

Richard is an experienced finance professional, having worked in finance and education roles all his career. Richard is an accredited SRMA and is an experienced MAT CFO, mentoring and supporting others new to role. Richard has been the finance lead on a number of MAT projects including free schools, new MAT projects and established MATs growing from 7 to 20+ schools, leading on the financial due diligence processes on behalf of prospective MAT sponsors. Richard has also supported Trusts in financial difficulty, working with Trust Boards and CEOs on deficit recovery plans and acting as the finance liaison with the DfE.

Most recently Richard has supported a review of business operation services in a MAT of 7 schools which has led to the MAT making informed strategic growth and staffing decisions. Alongside this Richard has played a pivotal role in supporting the CFO’s within 2 MATs, whilst facilitating due diligence activities and engaging with the Board of Trustees. 

Richard is currently leading project management establishment for a brand new 8 school MAT in the North West.

Helen has over 18 years of experience working with schools and academies in a finance and business support role. She has experience of working with Primary, Secondary, Special and Alternative Provision settings.

She specialises in budget scenario planning, financial efficiency reviews and integrated curriculum financial planning. In recent years, Helen has developed numerous recovery plans for academies experiencing financial difficulties.

Cath Kitchen

Education Consultant

Cath is an experienced leader in alternative provision and SEND having previously been the CEO of a MAT for medical APs. She represents the sector at the DfE, being part of the AP Stakeholder Group (looking at policy affecting APs) and she also co-chairs the Hospital Education Working Party with the DfE. Cath has co-authored booklets for schools, including one published by NASEN, and is regularly asked to give presentations at conferences and events specifically about SEND and AP. She recently published her first book ‘Including learners with medical needs in school’.

Cath is currently the Chair of the National Association for Hospital Education, a school improvement advisor, a previous NLE and was a pathfinder for the Ethical Leadership Framework, now part of the Ethical Leadership consortium. She led a DfE project investigating the use of telepresence robots in supporting transitions and gave evidence at the All Party Parliamentary Committee investigation into Alternative Provision . She is a founder member of the AP Research Network, looking at promoting best practice in the sector. 

Cath was awarded an OBE for services to children and young people in 2022.   

Louise Ryan

Safeguarding/SEND Consultant

In Louise’s current role as a Safeguarding Consultant, she offers support to Multi-Academy Trusts and individual schools in ensuring consistent, compliant and high-quality safeguarding practice. As part of this role, Louise currently provides regular, ongoing specialist safeguarding supervision to 30 schools across the UK, including ad-hoc advice and support for all safeguarding-related matters. Louise also produces and reviews safeguarding policies and procedures, as well as completing safeguarding audits and assurance reports for Trust Boards. Louise delivers safeguarding training and workshops and offers specialist advice, assistance and independent investigations in complaint procedures relating to safeguarding. Louise also provides support for complex safeguarding-specific Subject Access Requests.

Louise is a systemically trained social work practitioner with extensive experience of working in children and families services for over 11 years. Louise has previously worked as a Team Manager from 2017 to 2023, overseeing two teams of child protection social workers and practitioners, and has been a strategic lead in various areas of child protection practice, including Court Proceedings, Fabricated or Induced Illness, and building links with Education. Louise continues to work as an independent social worker completing expert assessments within the Court arena, which ensures up-to-date, relevant and in-depth advice, knowledge and support is offered to Multi-Academy Trusts and individual schools.

HR Consultant

Generalist HR professional with over 17 years’ experience in the public sector gained in a large local authority. Marita has also acted as Head of HR for two multi-academy trusts in West Yorkshire and works remotely for a variety of third sector clients. Working with schools and academies for over thirteen years in an advisory capacity, with two years leading the HR strategy and vision for a successful multi-academy trust.   

 Marita delivers bespoke HR strategy and support on all complex people matters.  

Julie Kendall

Julie has over 30 years experience in Education Finance and Business Management 

She has an accounting qualification and a degree in School Business Management, She has been a peripatetic bursar serving a wide range of schools, primary, secondary and special from both the LA and Academy sectors and was the business manager for a large secondary school. For the last 6 years Julie has been the CFO of a growing MAT of 9 schools.  Her area of expertise is governance, financial management, academy conversions, due diligence and internal audits.

She was involved in the Department of Education working party for the Academy Trust Handbook and was a member of the School Forum for an LA.  She has been a governor and has advised many governing bodies. She has carried out training sessions for governors on all aspects of school finance.

Lorna believes in the power of education to change lives and recently supported a higher educational institute to find savings of £4m, and overseeing a £20m merger to enable the institute to meet the strategic objective of creating a financially sustainable future, with these financial successes having been realised in the context of continuously improving educational outcomes. Similar support has been required in multi academy trust settings whilst helping to ensure the provisions achieve Good and Outstanding Ofsted outstanding judgements (under the current inspection framework).

Sarah Ferguson

Sarah Ferguson is an experienced Project Manager who has worked with Multi-Academy Trusts nationally over the past 15 years to support their successful establishment and growth.   

Sarah uses her recent experience as consultant COO for a growing Diocesan Trust in the East Midlands, where she oversaw its development from establishment to 30 schools on leaving. Sarah now supports a range of schools, Dioceses, and established MATs with a diverse range of growth and change projects including: new MAT establishments, academy conversions, Free School applications and opening, DfE funding applications and significant change applications.
